why transdisciplinarity?
Transdisciplinarity is an effort to overcome the limits implicit in bounded disciplinary approaches to knowledge. In my approach, this means navigating the concerns of different communities and audiences, as well as their interaction, by offering my clients feedback on their texts and projects.
Academic writing (like all writing) is not just about objectively describing the world. It is also about showing information in a compelling way; it’s about the story and pace that will keep your readers engaged; and about weaving the thread of your argument clearly for readers to follow. Reaching beyond disciplinary boundaries, then, is key to more successful texts.
How to reap the promises of transdisciplinarity without getting lost in the unfamiliar spaces between and beyond disciplines? How to get past the discomfort of uncharted grounds?
My mission is to help you navigate these spaces by tracing the thread of your research, and to assist in better capturing it in your texts, publications, and other works – from conception and conceptualisation, to development, editing, and publication.

why Filo?
My name is Filippo Bertoni, and people call me Filo – the Italian word for thread.
Through my training in the anthropology of technosciences, I have researched and engaged in transdisciplinary scientific collaboration for over ten years. In this way I learned that my passion for the natural and social sciences, combined with my talent for writing and cross-disciplinary communication, make me an effective editor with a unique transdisciplinary take on publishing.

I believe that my gift for storytelling and writing, as well as my proven experience in transdisciplinary research, can help you!

Whether you are a student wanting to sharpen their own thoughts or working on a publication; a researcher looking to better publish their results or respond to reviewers’ comments from other disciplinary fields; or the PI of a larger project seeking to smoothen out unfamiliar and sometimes slippery transdisciplinary collaborations, you can outsource some of the challenges of transdisciplinarity and writing to me!

what services do I offer?
According to your needs, I offer a variety of services, from simple copyediting and proofreading to more extensive developmental editing, and to editorial help with publication (like resubmissions and cover letters). I also offer trainings and ateliers to tutor and coach on academic writing, transdisciplinary collaborations, storytelling in natural and social sciences, and publishing. I also have experience in website design, and I am interested in unconventional formats, as well as science communication and fiction writing.
As my services are tailored to the specific needs of each client, I am happy to discuss not only already written out texts, but also ideas for articles, projects, or grant proposals. In the first orientation session – which can take place at my office in Amsterdam or online, and which is free of charge – we can discuss your ideas and your needs and figure out how best I can help.
Below you can find out more on some of the specific services I can offer. Don’t hesitate to contact me to learn more!
